All men need a place where they can go at the end of the day to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While activities like fishing or golfing can offer an enticing escape from reality, they also require considerable time and effort to enjoy. It’s much easier to spend a night relaxing at home, but this can be impossible if you have pets, kids, or a significant other in the house. This is why many men are embracing the idea of the man cave, which gives them a chance to kick back and watch a movie, read a book, or drink a beer in solitude. A man cave doesn’t necessarily need to be indoors, either–you can set up space outside where you can enjoy all things manly.  Here’s how you can plan your home garden and turn a shed, patio, or empty space into your very own man cave.

Planning Your Space

The most critical step in any construction project is planning. Before you start the sawing and nailing, you first need to suss out your space. Take a few moments to walk through your garden and think about where you might want to set up your man cave. It’s a good idea to bring a measuring tape so that you can make estimates of how much room you’ll have. You can also sketch up a plan on paper to make it easier to work out details regarding wiring, furniture, and decor.

Once you’ve made some preliminary blueprints, it’s time to move onto materials. Make a thorough list of all the building materials and tools that you’ll need to create your cave. This is also a good time to set up a budget to prevent yourself from overspending. To save money, you may want to see if you can use or borrow materials from friends and family members. You may also be able to rent more expensive equipment from your local hardware store instead of buying.

Getting Things Wired

Once you’ve planned your layout, you can start looking into wiring options for your man cave. While some men are fine with a bare-bones setup, others want access to amenities such as TV and AC. If you’re thinking about adding utilities to your cave, you need to consider electrical wiring and during the planning process. You may also want to think about installing an HVAC setup for climate control. Be aware that electrical wiring can be dangerous, however. If you don’t have the time or the energy to learn about how to wire your man cave, it may be a good idea to hire a professional to do the job.

Setting Up and Decorating

Your man cave is your space, and you can set it up however you like. While some men prefer a place to sit in silence and read, others want somewhere they can get together with friends and watch the game. If you’re at a loss when it comes to inspiration, here are some ideas of what to include in your man cave:

  • An entertainment system
  • A computer
  • Food and drinks, whether in a fridge or pantry
  • A collection of books, movies, and games
  • Comfortable seating

Whether you use it as a workshop, an office, or a backyard bar, your man cave is your space to unwind after a day at work or with the family. You can decorate it to your tastes and add all of the work and entertainment features that you need to keep yourself occupied. As long as you take the time to plan and build everything to code, you’ll have an outdoor space that you can enjoy for years to come.
